For the past two years I have been a big fan of one particular show. The Practice? American Idol? Ugly Betty? Monday Night Football? The Bachelor?
The absolute Greatest Show on Earth is CNN’s HEROES – a special tribute to everyday people who are changing the world. Considering the most popular shows on television are swimming with drama, crime, blood, guts, infidelity, losers, bad parenting and Paula Abdul, it is a breath of fresh air to see humble, hard-working souls being honored who have dedicated their lives to changing the world. Here are a few of the 10 finalists:
Efren Penaflorida (winner) – educating thousands of Filipino children living in slums by pushing carts of educational materials into their slums each day
Doc Hendley – brings fresh water to millions of people in under-developed countries
Budi Soehardi – has adopted 47 children in Indonesia
Andrea Ivory – goes door-to-door to help fight breast cancer
Jorge Munoz – feeds hundreds of hungry homeless in New York out of the back of his truck 7 days per week
Jordan Thomas – as a teenager he lost his legs in a boating accident. Founded organization from his hospital bed to help raise money for prosthetics for children.
Not only is this show so desperately needed, but we also need to allow these heroes to inspire us to do just a fraction of the service they are doing. If we all pitched in to help, it would be a vaccination against hunger, poverty, loneliness, illiteracy, and abandonment – which our world so desperately needs.
Go to CNN and NOMINATE A HERO for 2010.
Thank you CNN for producing a quality show, for honoring our heroes and recognizing the people who are changing our world.
